_THE PLAIN SET_

Back to List of Sets

2. The Plain Set (as recorded in 1993 by Paul D. McGuigan)
       [all figures fit music: vol. 1]
   -This set is regarded as a Clare set, although it seems to be danced there
    less often than the Caledonian.
   -Many set dancers consider the plain set to be one of the most enjoyable sets
    to dance.
   -Use the Clare Reel Step (a reel step that does not bring the heel down hard.)
   -1ST SIDES are to the left of 1ST TOPS

  The figures are unnamed, but I have put my own names down as helpful reminders.

1st Figure "Pass Through"
2nd Figure "Turn the Lady Under Twice"
3rd Figure "Ladies Cross; Gents Cross"
4th Figure "Horse & Cart"
5th Figure "Gallop; Ladies Chain & Change Partners"
6th Figure "Ladies in; Gents wheel; Change Partners"

Note:
	The Caledonian Set, The Paris Set, and The Plain Set can be danced with
        one of two fancy steps besides the basic reel step. However, these fancy
        steps are not always appropriate for other sets. Throughout the set,
        dancers can use these advanced steps for dancing at home, across the set,
        or housing around throughout the set.

  	Doubling at the end of each figure can be used in these sets. However,
        doubling is not to be done at the end of all reel sets.

1st Figure "Pass Through" {Reel Step: 104 bars}
  (The Plain Set) [fits music: vol. 1]
-Opening Position: (The Lead Around position.) Each couple joins hands in front
                    and face anti-clockwise around the circle, gents on the inside.
                    Right hand in right hand; left hand in left hand. Each Gent's
                    right arm is over his Lady's left arm. Gents' left shoulders
                    are about a foot off the centre of the set, forming a tight
                    formation. The fingers of each hand are pressed together and
                    cupped to hold onto the fingers of his or her partner's hand,
                    although not tightly.

A LEAD AROUND All four couples dance anti-clockwise around until back in
                   original places. During last two bars each gent, without
                   releasing hands, turns his partner clockwise under both arms
                   and then adopts the standard hold.

                                  The ladies then dance straight back to their

                                         to then face into the centre, where both

   {8 bars}

               (c) HOUSE INTO THE HORSE AND CART POSITION:
                        1ST TOPS dances around the house inside so as to reach
                        the location of the opposite couple at the end of the
                        eight bars. 1ST TOP LADY dances in on the left side of
                        the opposite gent and ends facing in. 1ST TOP GENT
                        ends facing the opposite gent.

                        The couples then link up in the following way:
                        1ST TOP GENT takes his own partner's right hand in his
                        right and the opposite lady's left hand in his left
                        hand. Without crossing his arms, the opposite gent
                        holds the ladies' other hands above the hands held by
                        1ST TOP GENT.
   {8 bars}

               (d) ADVANCE & RETIRE IN HORSE AND CART POSITION:
                        1ST TOP GENT retires and the three dancers facing him
                        advance to the centre (2 bars), return to the
                        SECOND TOP location (2 bars), and come back to the
                        centre again (2 bars).

                        Then the 1ST TOP GENT pulls the two ladies toward him.
                        They each turn outwards from the gent between them,
                        under the arms held by him, and then under the arms
                        held by the 1ST TOP GENT. The ladies come in on each
                        side of the 1ST TOP GENT, with the opposite gent now
                        alone facing the three (2 bars).

                        This whole movement is now repeated in the opposite
                        direction with the group of three and one advancing
                        (2 bars), retiring (2 bars), and advancing again
                        (2 bars). The 2ND TOP GENT pulls the two ladies
                        hands he is holding, causing the ladies to turn
                        outward to places between the two gents so that the
                        four dancers are in a circle in the centre of the
                        set (2 bars).
   {16 bars}

                                      and dance around clockwise.
   {8 bars}

               (f) LADIES CHAIN: When the circle breaks gents retire to their
